CHELSEA space presents No Formulas, an exhibition of preparatory maquettes and drawings for finished works, with a selection of proposals and scores for future projects by the internationally renowned artist, Richard Wilson.
Providing an insight into the working practices of the artist, this exhibition will include material across the span of Richard Wilson’s career, from Bow Gamelan scores and documentation to material from Wilson’s latest project, 1513: A Ship’s Opera, a new commission for the Thames Festival which also takes place in September.
British artist Richard Wilson is internationally celebrated for his interventions in architectural space which draw from the worlds of engineering and construction for their inspiration. With a career spanning over thirty years, Wilson has been the recipient of numerous prestigious commissions and twice nominated for the Turner Prize. The oil installation, 20:50, first made in 1987 at Matt’s Gallery, now permanently installed in the Saatchi Collection, was described by the art critic Andrew Graham Dixon as ‘one of the masterpieces of the modern age’ in the BBC television series The History of British Art. Recently, Wilson’s commission for the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill, featured a hydraulically teetering replica coach (inspired by the film The Italian Job) positioned at the edge of the building’s roof.
