Songs of Affliction
Composed for - and performed by – anybody who lives or works with affliction, this song cycle explores the human condition and the nature of suffering.

The performers are encouraged to communicate their own stories and experiences through simple musical phrases accompanied by rich orchestral colours and textures.

It is conceived as a flexible piece that can be long or short and for anything from a single soloist with a single instrument to full orchestra and multiple soloists.

This first outing will be performed by former and current mental health service users and the Kings College London Symphony Orchestra.

Hospital Ragas
A series of instrumental pieces that mark time, are in sympathy with the rituals of care, and are designed to enrich the hospital environment for both staff and patients.

Inspired by Indian musical principles and monastic chant, these pieces will be played over hospital tannoys at specific times of the day, week and year to influence the mood of the moment, for example, a morning piece for a summer Sunday or an evening piece for a Monday in winter.

The pieces have been written by renowned composer John Browne, currently Composer in Residence at the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery

King’s College London Symphony Orchestra is a well established and flourishing symphony orchestra whose membership is open to all students of the college. The orchestra has a strong reputation both within King’s and on the wider stage. They perform around 7 concerts each year including a major choral work in a prestigious London venue.

The conductor of the orchestra is Dominic Grier, who works regularly for the Royal Ballet and the Opéra National de Lyon, and who has performed with many orchestras both here in the UK and abroad. Under his direction, the orchestra has continued to grow from strength to strength.  Highlights of last season were a magnificent performance of Verdi’s Requiem at Cadogan Hall and Scriabin’s thrilling Symphony no.2 at the Duke’s Hall.
