Music for Life: Promoting social engagement and well-being in older people through community supported participation in musical activities

The research team and participants from the Music for Life project, funded by the ESRC New Dynamics of Ageing strand and led by Professor Sue Hallam, Institute of Education, will present findings from their research into the social and emotional benefits of participation in music. The presentations will include contributions from participants from musical activities funded through the project, as well as video documentation of some of the activities.

MUSIC FOR LIFE is a research project that explores the role of music in people’s lives and the impact of participation in music-making. This project aims to: 1)explore and understand the role of music-making in the lives of older people; 2) examine whether there is a link between participation in music activities and the improvement of well-being of older people; and 3) learn about potential wider benefits to families and/or residential communities when older people engage in music-making. Musical partners in the project are The Sage Gateshead, ‘Silver Programme’ the Guildhall Connect and the Music Department of the Westminster Adult Education Services (WAES).
