
Alexander Ponomarev: Sea Stories. Exhibition viewing and curator’s talk
To coincide with a major installation by Russian artist Alexander Ponomarev and new work created during the artist’s recent voyage to Greenland onboard a Russian scientific vessel, visitors to Calvert22 Foundation will have an opportunity to have a special viewing of the exhibition at 6.30pm followed by a talk with the show’s curator Nadim Sammam at 7pm.

Sea Stories is the first UK solo exhibition by Ponomarev (b. 1957). It will include some new works and some never seen before in the UK. Drawing from his background in nautical engineering and an early career as a submarine captain, Ponomarev uses journeys on the sea as a starting point to explore the relationship between illusion and ‘reality’, the utility of art, and the shifting tides of personal and cultural history.

Nadim Samman is an independent curator and art historian based in London. He read Philosophy at University College London and is currently completing an Doctorate on Russian Contemporary Art at the Courtauld Institute. His curatorial projects include presentations of Russian modern and contemporary art and, most recently, a large-scale photography exhibition at Somerset House.
Calvert22 Foundation is a not for profit gallery focused on Russian and Eastern European Art and Culture. The core activity of Calvert22 comprises of an innovative and challenging exhibition programme. Calvert22 is also developing an education programme by offering talks and seminars related to the exhibitions, developing educational partnerships with other like minded organisations and supporting cultural exchange programmes.
